Report on Silverknowes Golf  Outing  - 23rd August

Little did I know when I started the Fireaway golf Section that it would comprise not only of golfers but "diehards", who will play in all kinds of weather as well! The rain was teeming down, almost horizontal at Silverknowes and I was refusing to poke my nose out of the Clubhouse door. After being called all sorts of names, the kindest of which was a wimp, I reluctantly agreed to play and ended up in bed for a week! Certainly, we had the whole course to ourselves. Such is the interest in the Golf Section that Rocky Redpath travelled through from Dunbar and John Grey from Armadale. Ricky Barker won the match with a very creditable 38 stableford points, played out in testing conditions. The golf itself represents tremendous value with an opportunity to play in some outstanding Golf Courses. It costs £7.50, if you are in possession of an over 60 Edinburgh Leisure card and we have managed to persuade subsequent Course Starters, that the rest qualify for a special "Forces rate" of £13. Never mind that the Fire Brigade is not exactly Armed forces and everyone is retired anyway! I should say, that Mid and East lothian "over 60 cards" are accepted as well but for some strange reason West Lothian cards are not, I am not sure about Borders.

The next match is at Braids No 1 on Monday 25th October -1000hrs for 1030hrs. We usually have lunch along the road at the Braidhills Driving Range afterwards. Once again everyone is welcome, but for Gods sake -  get well wrapped up, for this crowd will play in anything.
