January Social Meeting – Cancelled:
Over the last two months we have been unable to access and update the Fireaway website as the annual renewal of the domain name (fireawayclub.com) failed to process. This was due to a credit card expiry date issue, unfortunately this resulted is us losing all access as administrators to the website and emails.
Fortunately (as of yesterday) we have now resolved all the issues and now own the domain name again.
We had intended to implement some changes in relation to Social Meetings and the Walking Section during January and inform everyone of the changes by updating the website and sending an all members email.
However, as a result of not having access to the website/emails the changes have not taken place and we have not been able to advertise the January social. Consequently, we have opted to cancel the social scheduled for this Thursday, 25th January. Sorry folks!
The next social will now take place on 29th March 2018. (time and venue to be decided)
1) Hillwalking Section:
A revamped hillwalking section, including new a webpage, will be active in the next few weeks with the first walk scheduled for mid February.
2) Retirement Function - Kevin Weir
Kevin would like to invite all colleagues, past and present, to join him for a farewell drink on Friday, 9th February 2018 (from 6:30pm) at Caley Picture House Bar, 31 Lothian Road, Edinburgh.
Fireaway Facebook Group:
The Fire Museum is in the process of digitising their catalogue of films and have now posted a number of the new upgraded versions on the Fireaway Facebook Group page. There's some really great colour footage of stations/watches etc, well worth a view.
The Facebook group, to which all Fireaway members and ex-LBFRS employees are welcome to join, can be accessed at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1648088992167580/
(Note you need to be a Facebook member and logged in to view the page)
Sad news with the announcement of the death of retired colleague Del Simpson on Sunday, 7th January, 2018. Del passed away peacefully at Borders General Hospital after a short battle with cancer.
His funeral was a family gathering only, as Del had requested, held at Borders Crematorium on 18th January. (For information: a number of photos and comments have been posted in relation to Del's passing on the Fireaway Facebook Group page.)
With one new member having joined in the past few weeks it brings the current membership to 210. See the Latest News page on the website for the names of recently joined members.
